Viking, the award-winning cruise line, revealed today that Italy has been voted as the UK’s favourite travel destination. To celebrate its sponsorship of the 2018 Classic FM Hall of Fame – the largest poll of the world’s most popular classical music – Viking has released its very own travel “Hall of Fame”. This top 10 list of preferred destinations shows that the nation of charming basilicas and world-famous local cuisine was followed closely by Norway and Portugal.
The poll asked travellers to vote for their favourite destinations from a list of the 69 countries that Viking visits and to share which factors they consider when recommending them. Culture, scenery and local people were regarded as most important, followed by weather, food and history.
The “Hall of Fame” top 10 destinations are:
- New Zealand
Authentic experiences at these top destinations – including the best memories, favourite local foods, top tips and secret shopping spots – have been compiled by Viking in to one handy travel guide to inspire travellers embarking on their next journey.
It wasn’t just the local ice cream parlours and delicious pasta that pushed Italy to the top but also cruising up the Grand Canal and stepping inside St Peter’s Basilica, which were noted as travellers’ favourite memories. Highlights included the stunning views of Lake Molveno, visiting the historic cathedrals in Sicily and exploring the Amalfi Coast. The Italy, the Adriatic & Greece, travelling through Venice, Bari, Naples and Rome, welcomes guests to submerge themselves in these cities’ rich culture and history.
Norway was voted as the second most desirable destination for attractions including the Northern Lights, the breath-taking fjords and iconic Bergen Old town. Recognised as one of the travel hot spots for 2018, the nation is home to unparalleled gastronomy including divine fresh fish and reindeer steak. Of Scandinavian heritage itself, Viking specialises in providing true Nordic experiences through itineraries such as Into the Midnight Sun and Homelands.
Portugal was also placed in the top three, with travellers reminiscing about cruising the Douro, visiting the botanical gardens in Lisbon and exploring the island of Madeira. Portugal was not only recommended
for its culture but also its fresh seafood and tapas, which can be experienced on the Portugal’s River of Gold cruise, travelling through Lisbon, Regua and Barca D’Alva.
Wendy Atkin-Smith, Managing Director of Viking UK comments: “We’re proud of the culturally-enriching experiences we offer in all 69 destinations, and what’s interesting about Viking’s ‘Hall of Fame’ is seeing exactly where our customers love to travel most and the experiences they value, from gastronomy and architecture to history and local culture.”
